`git status` is a command you'll use all the time when working with Git repositories.

This command will show the current branch you're on, and your commit history.

Since our repository is new, there isn't much to see:

No commits yet
nothing to commit (create/copy files and use "git add" to track)
```

This functionality is powered by the hidden `.git` directory in our repository. But what happens if we remove that directory?

```
$ rm -vrf .git
```

Now, when we run `git status`, it no longer works because this is no longer a repository, it's just a folder.

$ git status

fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
```

To get back to where we were, run `git init` again inside the directory:

git init
```
